La Cerrada / Closing of the Bones
The Closing of the Bones Ceremony is a sacred postpartum ritual rooted in ancestral Indigenous Mexican and Mayan traditions, created to honor the mother as she transitions from birth and begins the journey of returning to herself. This ceremony is an invitation to be held, nourished, and gently gathered after the immense opening of pregnancy, birth, and motherhood.
Traditionally, this ritual is offered within the first 40 days postpartum, a sacred period of rest, nourishment, and restoration for the mother. However, every woman and every birth is different, and the ceremony may be offered sooner or later depending on her recovery, needs, and readiness.
The ceremony begins with a restorative herbal bath and/or yoni steam, followed by a nurturing rebozo massage and full-body sobada—a traditional Mexican form of bodywork intended to support the body as it settles and realigns after birth. The ceremony culminates in the cerrada, or closing, where the body is gently and intentionally wrapped with rebozos from head to toe. This final closing is a deeply symbolic and sacred act of gathering—honoring what has been opened through birth and creating space to release, integrate, and begin anew.
Traditionally, these practices are believed to support the body in its postpartum transition, including the settling and realignment of the hips and organs, encouraging circulation and digestion, and helping the mother feel grounded and whole within her body again. Beyond the physical, the ceremony offers something equally profound: a moment to be cared for, witnessed, and held in the sacred threshold of motherhood.
While deeply rooted in postpartum tradition, a Closing of the Bones ceremony is not limited to the postpartum period. It can be offered at any significant threshold of life—a transition, transformation, loss, ending, or new beginning. The ceremony can serve as a sacred opportunity to consciously close one chapter, honor what has been, release what is no longer being carried, and enter the next chapter with intention. Whether following birth or another profound life transition, the cerrada reminds us that we, too, deserve to be gathered, witnessed, and held as we become who we are becoming.
